Laughing Buddha Test

RAJA RAMANNA WAS A PROMINENT INDIAN NUCLEAR PHYSICIST WHO PLAYED A VERY CRUCIAL ROLE IN INDIA'S FIRST NUCLEAR TEST WHICH WAS KNOWN AS "OPERATION SMILING BUDDHA" .

 

The test was conducted on May 18th 1974 in "Pokhran" the district of Rajasthan, which marked India's entry into the group of nuclear armed nations and was initially presented as a peaceful nuclear explosion.

Raja ramanna was  the head of the Baba Atomic Research Center (BARC) and also he was the principal designer of the nuclear device.

The preparations for the test were conducted very secretly that only a few group of officials and very few scientists were aware of the details about the test.

 Laughing Buddha Test was conducted on May 18 1974 at 8: 05 IST

 

THE NUCLEAR DEVICE WAS AN IMPLOSION-

NUCLEAR BOMB WITH PLUTONIUM CORE RING ABOUT 1400 KG AND DESIGNED TO yield BETWEEN 8 TO 10 KILOTONS OF TNT . The divice was detonated using a firing button which was pushed by pranab R. Dastidar a key member of test group.

 

The nuclear test significantly boosted the popularity of that time current prime minister Indira Gandhi and the Congress party that enhanced there image in Indian parliament.

Nuclear Suppliers Group(NSG) was formed to prevent nuclear proliferation as  response to the test.

Ramanna's leadership and expertise were very pivotal in the successful execution of the laughing Buddha test.
