"Nocturnal enuresis" commonly known as bedwetting is the involuntary urination that occurs during sleep primarily affecting children but also to some adults .

Types of nocturnal enuresis

1. Primary nocturnal  enuresis - This occurs when a person has never been dry at night for almost 6 months or longer.

2. Secondary nocturnal  enuresis- This type happens when a person who has been dry for at least 6 months starts wetting the bed again often due to medical or psychological issues.

PREVELANCE OF NOCTURNAL ENURESIS-

Approximately 1 in 10 children in US experience nocturnal enuresis . It is more common in younger children. An adult around 2% to 3% may experience primary nocturnal enuresis.

NOCTURNAL ENURESIS OFTENLY CAUSED DUE TO -

Their could be development factors as many children simply take some longer time to develop bladder control. It would also happen because of genetics as if there is a family history of bedwetting,  then it could increase the chances of experiencing it.

There could be some psychological factors too like stressful life events trauma or emotional disturbance can trigger episodes that would lead to bedwetting sometimes.

The prevalence of nocturnal enuresis and adults is reported to be around 2% to 3%.

A study which was conducted in Hong Kong they found that 2.3% of adults age between 16 to 40 years experienced primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE). PNE was slightly higher in males 2.7% compared to females 2.0%.

PSHYCOLOGICAL IMPACT-

Adults with nocturnal enuresis reported higher incidents of depression and lower self-esteem compared to non-enuratic individuals. Nocturnal enuresis in adults is notably higher than the previously assumed 0.1% highlighting the importance of addressing this condition in adult populations.
